We know you have questions. Below are some common ones we hear. If you want to know anything else, though, feel free to ask!

What Should I Wear?

Dress casually. First Church is a casual environment, though depending on what time you come you will see all sorts of styles – from suits and ties to jeans and flip flops. The earliest worship gathering, at 8:30 am Sunday mornings, is more traditional, with most people who attend at that time generally dressing that way. At 9:45 am and 11:15 am, the contemporary services are attended by folks who tend to dress more casually. Just come as you are!

What is the Worship/Preaching Style?

At the 9:45 and 11:15 services, the worship is contemporary. We sing modern songs, led by our band. At the 8:30 am service, we sing more traditional hymns, without the band.

The teaching consists of Biblically-based messages, which are the same at each of the three services. We generally consider a theme or series that covers a few weeks at a time, although each week’s message can be understood as a single message, so there is no need to worry about coming in the middle of a series.

How Long Are Your Services?

Each service lasts generally 60 to 70 minutes.

What About Kids?

We value kids at First Church, and we offer a number of opportunities for children of all ages. For the smallest children, we provide a fully staffed nursery, where you and your infant will be provided with a matching number that will be used to ensure that your child will only be released to you. The same number also will be used, by appearing on a small message board in the main worship area, to notify you if your child or the staff need you for any reason.

For older kids, there are various Sunday School classes, all grouped by age. These classes begin at age 3, and go through grade 6. Junior and senior high school students generally worship with us in the main worship area.

All of these classes and the nursery are available during each worship service, at 8:30, 9:45, or 11:15 am.

We also provide weekly programs, each Wednesday night, for kids ages 3 through high school.

How Many People Attend First Church?

There are approximately 700 total people who attend First Church each Sunday, including all three worship services. There probably are 350 or so at the most heavily attended service.

What About Communion?

We believe communion is important, and we celebrate it each Sunday. We celebrate by the passing around of small crackers and cups of grape juice. We believe that even though we celebrate in this large environment and even though we do this weekly, this is an important opportunity to reflect on the great sacrifice that Jesus made by dying on the cross so that those who accept his free offer of salvation will receive eternal life rather than the death that we all deserve.

How Can I Get Involved?

There are a number of ways to get involved. We believe that the Christian life is to be lived with one another in community and is not just a bunch of rules we all follow. As a result, we encourage you to get connected in the Church. To get more connected, contact Clare, our Director of Small Groups and Connections, or the church office.

How Is The Church Organized?

First Church is governed by a church board that consists of elders, deacons, deaconesses, and trustees. If you want to learn more about First Church come to our next Class 101.
